I often coach people having a problem with determining their niche. I can certainly relate to this, since it took me a while with some real soul searching before I was suddenly “awakened” to a passion I had hidden for over 40 years.
Since my life was turned upside down at the age of 14 when my parents divorced, I knew I needed to support other teens going through life challenging changes. This is why I have chosen the “divorce renovator” as my brand. My deepest desire is to empower adults and the children of divorce to over come the suffering that divorce can have on a family. My intention with the support of the universe is to lessen the instances of divorce and allow single adults to feel their strengths, while recognizing their weaknesses and have a certainty that the commitment they are making when choosing a relationship comes from these strengths within, not from fear for the lack of love.
I have many passions, and feel that I could be successful with various topics or niches, and feeling the passion is what drives me forward in expanding my presence and supporting people from all walks of life.
I am reasonably new to online marketing. I have been successful in direct sales and owning 3 businesses but never over the internet prior to 2009. During my search for training and mentoring I was guided to be very specific in finding a niche that not only aligns with my passion, but that targets problems people face daily. Being specific and targeting a narrow market was not an easy task for me, especially when I have always been very diversified! I understand the power of marketing to a specific need, but I came to the decision that sometimes we can back ourselves into a corner and extinguish our creativity if we are too specific. For many people being zoned in works, however for me, as a free spirit, I like to spread my wings and talk from my heart and personal experiences. That is why, within this website you will find a number of topics, all of which I have personal opinions and experience with.
One topic that gets me really fired up is nutritional health and holistic well being. Allow me to make my comparison between modern medicine and holistic health care.
In my experience a general practitioner has a general over view in modern medicinal care, who will make referrals to specialists when he deems it to be necessary. I had an experience I will never forget. My husband had suffered two heart attacks, and during what we felt was the third, we were in the emergency dept. the cardiologist ( a specialist – thus specific to a niche) asked us what the symptoms were. We explained what my husband had been experiencing which was more than one symptom. The Doctor shook his head, left the curtained area, and then a few minutes returned, and said “I only want to know the pertinent details, not all the symptoms”. Give me a break! All the symptoms seemed pertinent to us at the time. Three weeks of hospitalization it was determined my husband had 4 serious life threatening “issues” going on that lead to the heart attack, and he was extremely fortunate to be alive. Had we not insisted he stay in hospital until answers were found he may not be here today.
Holistic healing looks at you as a whole person. Your body, mind and soul make up who you are, and if there is a problem in one area it will likely show up in another area, although perhaps disguised. The reason I make reference to this situation is; when you determine your niche you must be open to receiving and allowing other topics or circumstances to arise that may be pertinent to why you are not allowing your self to move forward. You do not have to be the expert in all areas, you can outsource or refer clients to another expert, but you need to keep an open mind and release any resistance that holds you “stuck”. Allow the universe to offer you the solutions that you may have resisted.
If you are an online marketer who chooses branding as your specific niche, you will want to know the importance of how to brand yourself, what target audience are you branding to and how your branding needs to marketed. You may not specialize in all areas of advertising, but you want to gain real clarity as to how, why and where branding is significant. You may start out as the “branding expert”, but then develop further as you build your list and have the desire to expand your niche. I believe one of the important factors in becoming specific in your niche is to become known as the expert in your chosen narrow niche, then as your reputation becomes known, respected and successful, you can expand deeper and further.
So how are you going to find your niche? Start by brainstorming.
Take a poster board, vision board, or lots of paper (whatever method you feel connected to) and start making taking the ideas from your head to a visual medium:
- What are your strengths – physical, mental, spiritual? Are you verbal, outspoken or a good public speaker? Do you have good writing skills? Are you technical? Are you a good listener? Are you quick witted or do you need to ponder things? Do you have good people skills or do you prefer to work alone? Anything you can think of that you either feel you have a knack for, that others notice and perhaps you take for granted. What do people compliment you about? What were you good at in school?
- What do you really enjoy? What subjects did you enjoy in school? What were your dreams and aspirations of becoming when you were young that you may have set aside or forgotten? What hobbies, interests, sports, leisure activities do you like to do, or would like to do if you had the time and money?
- What experience do you have? What did you do as a child that was fun? What have your jobs been? What courses have you taken? What talents to you have that come natural to you? What books have you read that you gained insight from? What insight was it that inspired you?
Just write and write anything and everything that comes to mind. When you feel you have exhausted all your ideas, start a separate list for what you do not want or know you are not good at (these may become areas that you outsource so don’t allow yourself any preconceived ideas).
This whole exercise should take days, maybe even weeks, depending on your focus and how you feel. Listen to your intuition. Feel the emotion that drives you forward. Each time you think of something that excites you, put it down. When you feel good about completing the exercise go back over everything you have written and highlight all that you really enjoy, and cross off anything that you just don’t like or want.
Continue doing this, but keep in mind through the whole process you need to be checking in with your “emotional feelings” in regard to what you really enjoy and what you do not want. Like I mentioned, you can outsource or even barter with the items you don’t enjoy. When you feel excited, the idea just continues to evolve and ideas continue to come forward, then you know you have found a passion. When you are truly passionate about a topic, the work becomes play, everything flows downstream, and you begin attracting what you need at just the right time. This is what we talk about when we say we feel aligned with our purpose. The gut instinct, the intuitive feeling, the mental clarity of being and doing what you love! This is how we are meant to live. Each of us has a purpose in life, and when we stop long enough to listen to our inner self we resonate with our self.
You will know, mentally, spiritually and with physical feeling when you find your niche. You want to feel passionate and happy about living your purpose. When you do what you do because you love what you do, your energy soars.
I hope this helps!
Remember, your specific niche is the starting point for your new business so that you may stay specific and concentrated in one area. As you become successful and proficient in your niche you may spread your wings and either expand your niche or create another business.
I’d say good luck, but it is not luck you need, it is just being yourself and focusing on your very own personal emotional guidance system and appreciating the talents, experience, and recognition of doing, being and having all that you desire.
Please leave me a comment with anything you may have to add, or how you found your niche. Great post Wendy,
very helpful and comprehensive.
Establishing our niche can be a bit of a challenge and I think that sometimes we need to just start with something that feels good and allow it to grow or lead us to the actual niche we’re searching for.
Starting with something is a better option than staying stuck and not doing anything.
I love the look of your site Wendy, very cool
